C2PA: provenance associated with a file

C2PA defines signed provenance records that can document creation and editing history. A supported embedded container can be removed from a copy without re-encoding the image. That operation also removes the provenance carried by that container.

An empty credential result is not proof of human authorship. Credentials can be absent from either human-made or AI-generated content, and provenance can exist outside the particular local copy.

SynthID: a watermark inside the media

Google describes SynthID as an imperceptible watermark embedded in generated media and designed to withstand common changes. It is not the same thing as an EXIF field or XMP packet.

This cleaner preserves encoded image and video payloads. It therefore does not erase SynthID or other pixel-level watermarks. It does not test for their presence either. If you need watermark verification, use the relevant provider’s verification tools.

Visible marks and platform labels

A visible logo or label baked into an image is part of the pixels. Removing it would require image editing, which this tool does not perform. A label drawn by a social platform next to a post is controlled by that platform.

A metadata cleanup report answers a limited question: which supported containers were removed from this local output, and whether the encoded media payload stayed unchanged. It does not answer whether a platform will classify, label or distribute the content differently.

Common questions

Does remove AI label mean remove every AI signal?

No. On this site it means managing supported embedded metadata containers. Pixel watermarks, visual content and platform records remain outside the tool’s scope.

Can a clean metadata report prove a real photo?

No. Absence of metadata cannot establish how an image was created.

Why preserve the original file?

The original may retain useful authorship, editing or licensing history that is removed from the cleaned copy.
