PNG metadata lives in chunks
PNG separates image data and ancillary information into chunks. A file can contain textual parameters, an EXIF block, color information and other metadata. These serve different purposes, so removing every ancillary chunk blindly is not a safe display-preservation strategy.
This tool keeps a defined set of image, color, display and animation chunks. It removes text and credential chunks, modification time and other non-display ancillary chunks. Unknown critical chunks are rejected because ignoring them could change how the image should be decoded.
Transparent images and animation
The cleanup path does not flatten alpha or render the PNG through a canvas. Supported transparency and APNG animation chunks are retained byte for byte. The media verification includes those retained display chunks.
A browser preview may render animation differently from the application where you deliver it. Open the downloaded file there before replacing an asset in a design, presentation or publishing workflow.
Clean a PNG export
- Add the original export to the workspace. The parser validates chunk boundaries and checksums.
- Review text field names in the inspection details. Use Privacy clean to remove camera EXIF as well.
- Clean and download the file, then check the verification report.
- Archive the original separately if you need embedded prompts, captions or workflow settings.
Common questions
Are compressed PNG text fields removed?
Yes. The zTXt and iTXt containers are removed as complete chunks; their contents do not need to be decompressed first.
Why did a PNG fail checksum validation?
A chunk does not match its stored checksum. The file may be damaged or malformed. Export a fresh copy.
Can I keep PNG copyright text?
This release removes all PNG text chunks. Keep the original if its textual credits must remain embedded.
